Living in Space.

From Science Fiction to the International Space Station
by Giovanni Caprarahe

Living in space is no longer only a dream! This picture book covers the history of the concept as well as the reality of space habitation, from the theoretical work of Hermann Noordung in the 1920s the Russian "Salyut" and the famous "MIR", being the first space-stations at all, and the US-European "Skylab" project to our days first launchings of modules for the International Space Station, being designed to become as large as a football field.

It also presents fictional space stations, including those in the movies 2001 or Star Wars, and the classic "wheel" proposed by Wernher von Braun; and so on. Much of the text covers areas already dealt with in other recent histories of space flight, but Caprara's selection of graphic material is marvelous.

Space Stations. Systems and Utilization.

Ernst Messerschmid, Reinhold Bertrand and Frank Pohlemann
This is a very professional book made for aerospace students at universities as well as air and space engineers, but is also clearly enough written for the interested space station enthusiast. The design of space stations like the recently launched ISS is a highly complex and interdisciplinary task. This book describes component technologies, system integration, and the potential usage of space stations in general and of the ISS in particular. It so addresses students and engineers in space technology. Ernst Messerschmid holds the chair of space systems at the University of Stuttgart and was one of the first German astronauts.

Space Station Science.

Space Station Science : Life in Free Fall
by Marianne J. Dyson, Dave Klug
(Illustrator), Buzz Aldrin
This is a book for kids, but somewhat interesting for their parents, too. For example, most people know that astronauts experience weightlessness in orbit, but how many people know that a lack of gravity means more than dealing with simple inconveniences such as having to learn how to get dressed while floating?
Weightlessness is only one of the subjects in Space Station Science. The book is divided into five sections: Getting There, Space Basics, Living in Space, Working in Space and Coming Home. Each is filled with wonderful descriptions, comments from astronauts, and amusing factoids. (Did you know that astronauts don't burp while in space?) Share some "Oh, wow" moments with your child as you read about the challenges of surviving in space, the solutions NASA is using to overcome these difficulties and why it's worthwhile going into space in the first place. The book also includes about a dozen hands-on activities, as well as suggestions on where to turn for more information.
